The Barcelona Celebration Ketubah
Artist
Esther Newman-Cohen
Medium
Painting - Giclee Print On Paper
Description
A 14th century Barcelona Haggadah was the inspiration for this Ketubah. The original design was a flippant, asymmetric, almost modern pattern which appealed to the artist. In the upper and lower panels several botanical elements can be seen, particularly grapevines and grapes. Unusual in this Ketubah are the animals featured as part of the design - a whimsical rabbit below and a flamingo above, both symbols of fertility. The traditional wedding song appears at the bottom:
"The voice of joy and the voice of rejoicing, the voice of the Groom, and the voice of the Bride."
Painted in watercolor and in pen, this picture demonstrates a successful combination of bold color and line.
The text is in both Hebrew and English and is based on the traditional text.
The ketubah arrives by post in a cardboard tube. It is a giclee print of the original work which was drawn by hand.
