Located in the Judean Hill is the deep, steep-sided gorge of Nahal Darga, starting at 50 meters above sea level, with the Dead Sea 400 meters below. The winding and highly scenic gorge drops into the bleak depths of the flashflood-carved Nahal Darga. Near the bottom is a detour to the Muraba'at Caves where one of the last stands of the Second Jewish Revolt against Rome (132-135 CE) took place. The revolt, led by Simeon Bar Kosiba, a.k.a. Bar Kochba, was in reaction to the official Roman conversion of Jerusalem to the pagan city of Aelia Capitolina with a temple to the god Jupiter. Within a short time it had spread throughout the country, and the rebels took Jerusalem, which had not been heavily fortified by the Romans. The rebellion was of sufficient magnitude for Emperor Hadrian to order his premier general Severus, then in Britain, to deal with it. About Esther Newman-Cohen
Dr. Esther Newman-Cohen is a highly creative Israeli-based artist. She engages in a wide range of artistic activity, including drawing, painting and woodcarving. Her subjects range from abstracts to realistic portraits and landscapes, done in a variety of media - pencil, ink, aquarelle, pastel, acrylic and oil. She also designs ketubot, Jewish marriage contracts, many of which are also posted on Fine Art America. Over the past five years she has added wood sculptures to her repertoire. Her first solo exhibits took place in Jerusalem, at the Alliance Francaise in 1989: "The Women of Jerusalem," in 1992 at the Gerard Behar Theater: "Flowers and Landscapes of Jerusalem," and in 2008 at the Jerusalem Botanical Garden: "Flowers: A Love Story."...
