Description
Located in the Judean Hill is the deep, steep-sided gorge of Nahal Darga, starting at 50 meters above sea level, with the Dead Sea 400 meters below. The winding and highly scenic gorge drops into the bleak depths of the flashflood-carved Nahal Darga. Near the bottom is a detour to the Muraba'at Caves where one of the last stands of the Second Jewish Revolt against Rome (132-135 CE) took place. The revolt, led by Simeon Bar Kosiba, a.k.a. Bar Kochba, was in reaction to the official Roman conversion of Jerusalem to the pagan city of Aelia Capitolina with a temple to the god Jupiter. Within a short time it had spread throughout the country, and the rebels took Jerusalem, which had not been heavily fortified by the Romans. The rebellion was of sufficient magnitude for Emperor Hadrian to order his premier general Severus, then in Britain, to deal with it. The fighters retreated, making their last guerrilla-style stands in these mountains in the hopeful but erroneous belief that the geographical obstacles might deter Hadrian's imperial army. Indeed, ancient scrolls left in this and neighboring caves came to light in the early 1950s, several with military content bearing Bar Kochba's own signature. Severus suceeded in turning the tide by means of a series of sieges, starving out the rebels in their strongholds and places of refuge. Jerusalem was retaken and future Jewish settlement there was prohibited by Hadrian. The last fortress to fall was Betar, not far to the southwest of Jerusalem, which was captured by the Romans during the Summer of 136 C.E. By the end of the war many Jews had been massacred, the land had been devastated again, and distinguished rabbis had been martyred. Once again a Jewish attempt to defeat the Romans had failed. This is a signed original work drawn in soft pastels on paper.
