Artist's Description
This Wood Bas Relief is based on a Da Vinci painting entitled Young Girl in Profile in Renaissance Dress. Originally drawn by Da Vinci in ink and chalks, the beautiful young lady's costume and elaborate hairstyle reflected Milanese fashion of the late 15th century.
In 1998 the Da Vinci painting was sold for a mere £12,000 ($19,000) at Christie's when it was billed as 'German, early 19th century'. Subsequently leading art experts came to agree that it is almost certainly by Leonardo da Vinci and could be worth about £100 million. A Paris laboratory found that a fingerprint on the picture is 'highly comparable' to one on a da Vinci work in the Vatican while carbon analysis of the artwork is consistent with such a dating.
I happened to see this item in the newspaper and fell in love with the girl. I drew a copy of the photo and hand carved this wood bas relief in mahogany.
