Title
Blessing the Candles
Artist
Esther Newman-Cohen
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
In this work an elderly Jewish woman wearing a scarf is seen as she blesses the Sabbath candles on Friday night. The picture does not however contain the candles but only shows the woman in the poverty of her surroundings (her only possessions are her bed, her picture, there's a crack in the wall). As she does so, light and warmth enter the room (the pink tones of the wall and her dress) making a sharp contrast to the cold stone exterior of the building. She is portrayed in a grotesque fashion, her face painted in garrish colors, while harsh, slanting lines of the window give us an insight into her lonely, hard life. This is an original oil painting on canvas stretched on a wooden frame and signed on top left "E. Newman-Cohen", by noted Israeli artist ESTHER NEWMAN-COHEN (1948-). Shipped unframed.
