Description
Consciousness is the state or quality of awareness, or, of being aware of an external object or something within oneself. Attempts have been made to define it as: sentience, awareness, subjectivity, the ability to experience or to feel, wakefulness, having a sense of selfhood, and the executive control system of the mind. Nonetheless, philosophers and non-philosophers differ in their intuitions about what consciousness is. While most people have a strong intuition for the existence of what they refer to as consciousness, many philosophers and scientists have been unhappy about the difficulty of producing a definition that does not involve circularity or fuzziness. Many philosophers have argued that consciousness is a unitary concept that is understood intuitively by the majority of people in spite of the difficulty in defining it. Others have maintained that the level of disagreement about the meaning of the word indicates that it either means different things to different people (for instance, the objective versus subjective aspects of consciousness), or else that it is an umbrella term encompassing a variety of distinct meanings with no simple element in common. This series entitled Inward Consciousness is meant to express these dilemmas and give them artistic expression, based on my own inward consciousness on a particular day.
