Esther Newman-Cohen
Medium
Drawing - Giclee Print On Paper
Description
Of the existing historical examples of Ketubot from Jewish communities around the world comes this 17th century style Ketubah from Villefranche in the south of France. As in most traditional Ketubot, calligraphy and linear designs applied in multiple borders were emphasized over painted imagery. This Ketubah reflects the influence of Moorish architecture. The upper panel contains the Menorah, one of the traditional symbols of Jewish life. In this elaborate hand-painted ink design we find the traditional Ketubah passages in Hebrew:
"He who finds a wife finds goodness"
"In an hour of blessing, success and spirituality"
The text appears in English and Hebrew and is based on the traditional text.
The ketubah arrives by post in a cardboard tube. It is a giclee print of the original work which was drawn by hand.
