Two Olive Trees
Artist
Esther Newman-Cohen
Medium
Mixed Media - Mixed Media On Paper
Description
This is a signed original work painted in Mixed Media (watercolor, sepia ink) on paper. It depicts two olive trees that I painted pleine aire at Kibbutz Ramat Rachel in 1988. 14. The olive was one of the most valuable trees to the ancient Hebrews. It is first mentioned in Scripture when the dove returned to Noah’s ark carrying an olive branch in its beak (Gen.8:11). Since that time, the olive branch has been a symbol of “peace” to the world, and we often hear the expression, “extending an olive branch” to another person as a desire for peace. The State of Israel chose the olive leaves around the Menorah as its emblem and the symbol of the Israel Defense Forces shows a sword wrapped by an olive branch.
