Description
In Israel Jews celebrate the beginning of spring with the holiday of Tu B’shvat, i.e., the 15th of the Hebrew month of Shvat. According to the sage Hillel, this is the New Year of Trees. Strongly connected to Tu B’shvat is the almond tree (Prunus dulcis) native to the Middle East and South Asia. The almond tree is the first tree to blossom after the winter rains in Israel and so is the precursor of spring. Children sing about the almond tree: Tu B'shvat has arrived, holiday of the trees. All over Israel people plant trees on this day. This photograph was taken at Sataf near Jerusalem, Feb. 2015.
